The How-to’s of a Heating System Part 2 – Picking your Boiler

Mr. Plumber is an expert in all your heating needs and we’re here to help you pick out your new boiler.

In the first article of our Heating System Series, we talked about how some boilers are more efficient at heating the water to warm your house than others. That means less oil, wood, etc… is needed to heat your place and it’ll cost you less money in the long run. The material the oil-fired heating boiler is made out of can also have a large effect on your heating system.

Steel boilers

Many earlier heating systems were designed to hold a large amount of water with a sensor in place to maintain a preset temperature. The boiler would always have a ready source of hot water to heat your home, which is great for colder months but less ideal for warm July days. At the time when these were popular heating oil was less expensive and the steel boilers used needed to stay hot to prevent condensation in the combustion chamber and venting systems.

But as the cost of heating oil has skyrocketed in recent years, the technology of oil-fired boilers has had to change, too.

Cast iron boilers

The cast iron boiler has been around longer than the steel boiler but has been newly designed. Modern-day cast iron boilers are smaller and hold less water. These new boilers have a cold start system, which means your boiler operates “on-demand”, so the oil burner fires only when it is needed to. A good cast iron boiler is also made from a flexible cast, so it can withstand the thermal expansion of the current day’s control systems.
